All art starts with an idea...Ours was to give women directors and writers a space to experiment, to learn, and to develop. A space to focus on the process rather than the product, and to take risks and make mistakes.
Plato states that True Artists are those which give birth to a new reality.
Directors and playwrights work together and create a new world from the story
they are telling. It takes a lot of courage to create this world!
The best way to gain confidence as a director or playwright and to find your art is to practice, practice, practice. Unfortunately, the rising costs of a production and fierce competition means there are few places for artists to do this.
Every production becomes precious - and this creates an atmosphere of great pressure where risks are impossible.
The New Works Forum strives to solve this dilemma.
We are a place where risks can be taken. We want artists to find their voice...
even if mistakes are made along the way. The Forum is a sketch book...it is not the masterpiece. It is a place to workshop and try new ideas...we put the emphasis on the creative process rather than a finished commercial product.
A place to practice, practice, practice.
